If you're targeting surface activity, focus on areas with lily pads and cast from the bridge side. Use spoons, jigs, larger spinners, or soft baits for the best results. Spotted bass are excellent XP/credit earners if you're still in Texas.

It's also crucial to remember that your line should be the weakest part of your setup. If you accidentally set the drag too high or a fish runs out of line, you want it to break instead of your rod or reel. Choose a reel with a max drag just over your line weight and select rods rated for the line you're using.

For beginners, starting with cheap but sufficient gear is recommended. Most rods you have access to should work, as long as they're rated for the line you're using.
